Practice Using Gratitude And Grace With Yourself: A Simple Strategy From Cheri Timmons

Mirror, mirror on the wall…

What do you say in your head when you look in the mirror?

Are they words of kindness, affirmation and gratitude?

Or are they messages of negativity, disapproval and shame?

The next time you look at yourself in the mirror – whether it is while you are washing your face, getting a full-length view of your outfit or catching a glimpse of your reflection as you pass a window – notice the words that come to mind as you take in what you see.

If you are inclined to criticize (“My eyes are too big”, “My hair looks awful today”, “I hate the way clothes look on me”), you are doing damage.  Each negative message you deliver to yourself wears down your self-esteem and confidence.

Are these comments you would say about a friend or colleague?  Probably not.

So, show that same kindness and grace to yourself.

The next time you see your reflection, give yourself a compliment.  It can be about your physical appearance, how you performed in a recent class or meeting or a positive quality.  For example, “You have a great smile.”, “You shared some really creative ideas today.”, “You are a patient mother.”

Intentionally say it as a “You…” statement, rather than “I…”.  This shows you are really seeing yourself as a person in this world, with unique and powerful qualities and you are noticing those special virtues and naming them.

Move towards making this a practice.

Notice how your mood or energy start to shift when you focus on something positive or for which you are grateful.

Take that positivity and gratitude out into the world and enjoy spreading it around.
